For intrepid travellers, a journey on the Trans-Siberian railway from Moscow in the west to Vladivostok on Russia’s western coast, is a must on their “bucket list”. To cover the 6,152 mile trip in one go will take seven days and will include 6 on board “sleepovers”.
The trains are safe, even for solo female travellers, and comfortable with a range of ticket classes from 2 berth 1st class tickets to bunks in a dormitory carriage for those who want to keep to a more moderate budget and who are keen to meet local Russians.
The best time to travel is during the Summer months from May to September when daylight hours seem almost never-ending and the weather is good. Winter can look like a picture perfect Christmas card with the Siberian landscape bathed in heavy snow but daylight hours will be much shorter and travellers will need to wrap up snugly if they want to stretch their legs at any of the longer station stops.
